Keeping in mind the current situation, there have been many things one has had to get used to. From virtual meetings to absorbing inner surroundings, it is not without adjustment and a few challenges. Fashion stylist and owner of Filigree Jewelry, Alishay Adnan discusses how her love for spontaneity has had to simmer down due to virtual coordination, but how she’s taking a positive outlook and revisiting old accessories used for projects as well as catching up on some much needed time. We sit down with the lovely Alishay Adnan as she discusses all and shows one how to get a good work look! Scroll down to check out more!
Given the current situation, what are some of the challenges you feel stylists will face?
Apart from the obvious logistical challenges, I feel our ability to style in person with the freedom to try out a variety of looks is definitely one of the bigger obstacles. Being a stylist, you want to express yourself through your work and take pride in it – and many a time, our ideas and inspirations look different in photoshoots compared to how they look in real life (or vice versa!).
Where we could, at first, try out an outfit or accessory followed by another trial and then decide, social distancing (which everyone should obviously observe) has resulted in us styling a lot more in advance or even virtually in some cases! It definitely has limited our spontaneity – but I find where you’re prepared in advance and know the look you’re going for – you can be just as spontaneous and creative!
What are some of the styling techniques you’ve been studying during your time?
Aside from keeping up with the latest trends and techniques, I’ve really been drawn to creating fresh new looks by reusing items from previous shoots or just stuff hidden at the back of my closet. It’s been quite a fun process rediscovering things and styling them to create different looks!
And, with life at somewhat of a standstill / lockdown, I think everyone’s really taking inspiration from their immediate surroundings, be it home or elsewhere. It’s allowed people to identify themselves and rediscover their personal style.
What is one accessory that always makes you feel comfortable?
It has to be my sunglasses. They instantly make me feel fashionable, protect my eyes from the sun and (most importantly!) hide my expressions when it’s way too early in the morning and I haven’t had my coffee yet.
When creating a look, what is the one accessory you feel is important to include?
Fashion has no rules anymore, it’s about expressing how you feel. Any accessory can be a game-changer. It really depends on the image you’re trying to portray, what you want the look to say about you and the product that’s in focus.
When styling myself, I know comfort is my top priority – I need to look like I’m wearing the clothes rather than the other way round.
All that being said, I do like to throw in midi rings wherever I can – it’s the perfect detail and works with any and every look.
What are some of your favorite looks from this self quarantine time?
My favourite looks all have an authentic approach to how you should be styling at this time at home… which is comfortable!
Here are some of my faves:
Izabel Goulart –
Possibly my favourite because I’ve never seen an outfit look this good while being so so cosy. Just love.
Peggy Gou –
I just adore everything she wears and how it reflects her uber-cool personality.
Nina Dobrev –
While this shot looks straight from an editorial, you can easily tell how casually she’s carrying it. Effortless.
Halima –
She’s an inspiration and has shown us how sometimes a scarf and turtle neck is all you need to make a strong style statement.
Negin Mirsalehi –
This look screams Sunday, style and snug. Sign me up!
