The Grand Master, Sabyasachi Mukherjee opened India Couture Week 2014 in exemplary style with a runway constructed like a vintage railway set. Perhaps the artist wanted to break away from the somewhat predictable aesthetic he has come to be associated with, that is of excessive opulence, old world heritage crafts, and vintage regalia. But try as he may his vision is subconsciously too deeply embroiled in Sabyasachi-esqe ways to be so easily swept away. This was a truly wondrous collection depicting all the richness and shimmering layers that the Calcutta born and bred label aspires too but with a deliberate edge.

Collarless fitted jackets replaced typical choli blouses and unusual asymmetric layers were crafted with Jodhpur pants while the purposefully placed extreme plunging necklines made a noticeable statement given the high necks and Nehru collars that we have come to expect from the designer. Nonetheless what shone strongest was the stunning detailing and embellishment on a muted plaette with the occasional pop of loud bandhgala printed suits. Soft sheer overlay saris on intricate embroideries and all over embellished capes over ghaghras are what brides-to-be will be queuing up for this Fall/Winter. The designer’s long time muse, the newly married Rani Mukherjee modeled a Sabyasachi subtle ivory zardozi sari at the show to support her friend.
