Finding the perfect lip colors to compliment the natural wheatish skin tone that most of us have is a tricky business and the Asian or white makeup lady behind the counters at malls abroad are utterly clueless when it comes to advising on the right shades. So you can experiment with the millions of different codes and puzzling names available till your head hurts or you can note down and pin point the exact shades you’re looking to try with a little help from our makeup expert Natasha. We asked Natasha to narrow down all the shades that are made for desi skin whatever your mood, time of day, or occasion that you’re dressing up for.

M.A.C Lip pencils

“Before we start it is important to recognize that lipsticks tend to draw attention to the area around your mouth and your under eyes so basic coverage is important especially if you have pigmentation areas. Cover up with a good primer and concealer to balance the color on your lips. Additionally how you apply your lip pencil is key. First outline your lip with the lip pencil shade mentioned with the respective lipsticks below, then fill it in with the lip color. Finally you must go over the lip line with a lip brush (M.A.C is a good one) to blend the outline into your lipstick. Remember lip pencils are the unsung heroes of the entire process.

Honey Love by M.A.C

Neutrals: The basic essential colors that you must have in your makeup kit for an everyday understated look or even paired with a heavy smokey eyed look are as follows. The rule of thumb is when you go for subtle neutrals they tend to draw out the color from your face so you must accentuate with a deeper kohl eye and/or blush to avoid looking like a cadaver! You can use Spice by M.A.C lip pencil with all of these lipstick shades by MA.C:

  • Honey Love
  • Underplay
  • Spirit
  • Cherish
  • Siss

Lovelorn by M.A.C

Please Me by M.A.C

M.A.C Impassioned

M.A.C Faux

Pinks: Next come the pinks that make up the widest shade category in any lipstick brand. To make life easier for yourself always remember the pastier your skin color the better lighter hues will look on you. For darker skin tones deeper, bolder colors make for a striking face. For the pinks a M.A.C lip pencil in Beurre will go with all the following shades also by M.A.C:

  • Please Me
  • Pink Pigeon
  • Impassioned
  • Faux
  • Love Lorn
  • Scanty

M.A.C Twig

Moms Love: For the lovely Moms who actually are the largest lipstick wearing group but are apprehensive to being too experimental with their look, these M.A.C shades paired with a Mahogany M.A.C lip pencil are ideal choices. They are great new age version of mid-tone hues:

  • Captive
  • Twig
  • Roam Free

Berry Lip: A stunning deep berry pout is very much in trend at the moment and I personally love it and often use it in the shoots I style. You can either apply these shades on dark or to get more of a stain effect, dab your lips with a tissue after applying. You can use these shades with a M.A.C Mahogany lip pencil as well:

  • Dark Side
  • Cyber
  • Dubonet

Morange by M.A.C

M.A.C Lady Danger

Oranges: I am personally obsessed with a bright orange lip. It is perfect for the girl who likes to make a statement with her makeup and because it is the closest shade to compliment the yellow in South Asian skin tones, it works beautifully on our skin type. For these shades I would recommend a M.A.C Cherry Lip pencil:

  • Morangee
  • Lady Danger
  • Kinda Sexy
  • Peach Stock

Zoe Salanda wears M.A.C Ruby Woo

Rihanna launches RiRi Woo shade for M.A.C

M.A.C Red

Reds: Most people have the common misconception that tan skin is hard to pair with a red lipped pout. However this is absolutely untrue. For our skin type it is best to go a little bit more deeper with red and these three M.A.C shades are the classic choice to be applied with a M.A.C Brick lip pencil:

  • Ruby Woo
  • M.A.C Red
  • Russian Red

Homemade lip scrub

No matter how beautiful the shade you apply, if your lips are under nourished and flaking nothing could look worse. If you have dry and cracked lips make sure you apply a good lip balm such as La Mer or a mid-level great brand is Papaw Ointment available any where abroad as is Carmex. Apart from this if you have scaly lips a remarkable home remedy is to take an equal tea spoon each of olive oil, honey, and a good brand of brown sugar, mix them together and rub on your lips with a tooth brush but not the one you use on your teeth! You can even leave a bit of olive oil on overnight for a fast results.

Have fun with your lip colors ladies and make sure you try on the shades before buying them to suit your individual taste, you can even mix a few different ones to create your own unique look!”
