Bollywood Blast: Lakme Fashion Week Summer 2013 Moments

The Lakme India Fashion Week Summer Resort 2013 has thus far enamored audiences as much with the best of Bollywood Celebrities walking the runway as it has with the creations of the most sought after Indian designers, maybe even more. While some commercial red carpet designers led by Manish Malhotra and Vikram Phandis played more on the celebrity popularity card, others like Masaba Gupta, Asmita Marwa and even Nikhil Thampi relied only on their aesthetic sensibilities.

Kajol and Karisma Kapoor for Manish Malhotra at LFW 2013

Dia Mirza for Vikram Phadnis

Manish Malhotra’s ‘100 years of Cinema 1913-2013’ collection was an ode to Indian Cinema Fashion and as such all his muses from Kajol to Karisma Kapoor and even the next generation ‘Student of the Year’ heroes were part of the collective. Although we appreciated the fusion of neon color block saris worn by Priyanka Chopra and Kajol, these were somewhat typical of what we have seen the designer do for Bollywood celebrity Award functions in the past. Karisma meanwhile carried a Phulkari creation similar to what we saw at the WILFW earlier in the month.

Neha Dhupia for Vikram Phadnis

Malaika Arora and Family for Vikram Phadnis

Vikram Phandis’s bridal couture showcase also saw some beloved stars grace the runway including the alluring Malaika Arora, the heart warming Juhi Chawla, and new up and comer Ileana D’Cruz. There was a lot of rich antique gold brocade and ivory needlework lehngas with jewel tone heavily detailed dupattas that worked like magic.

Parineeti Chopra Showstopper for Masaba Gupta

Postcards from Benaras by Masaba Gupta

Masaba Gupta

The real stars for us were Masaba and Asmita Marwa among others like Naeem Khan, Nikhil Thampi, Anushka Khanna and Gaurang. Parineeti Chopra for Masaba was one of the best moments of the entire event and the fun loving actress was completely in tune with the Masaba philosophy that brought a new kind of glaring fusion silhouette. The figurine printed tapered jacket and dhoti skirt reminded us a bit of our own Gulabo by Maheen Khan. Commenting on her ‘Postcards from Benaras’ collection the designer commented, “My collection is an ode to the widows of Benaras. It is interesting and I saw that no one has picked up this idea before. My collection had predominantly white in it. I used traditional Benarasi jewellery. The whole idea was to create a fusion. The idea was to make it look jarring. It was an Indian fusion line.”

Asmita Marwa’s Moon Magic Collection

Asmita Marwa at Lakme Fashion Week 2013

Asmita Marwa who has been rated by Vogue as one of nine top up and coming designers, was inspired by a modern day gypsy theme for her ‘Moon Magic’ collection. She used charming ornamental knick knacks and splashy prints in trendy de-constructed layered silhouettes with minute attention to detail.

Naeem Khan’s Oscar dress was among our favorites along with Nikhil Thampi who brought an international level of appeal. Shehla Khan’s debut collection was a definite standout while we loved the innovative spin put on the ‘sari’ by Aarti Vijay Gupta with her soothing color tone prints and Anushka Khanna’s obi belted waist with a city landscape print running border. The authentic Indian textured fabrics used by Akaaro and Gaurang were divine. Tarun Tahiliani adhered to his signature classic with understated traditional glamour.

Kareena Kapoor will be closing the Lakme Fashion Week Finale to be held today, lets see if the show ends on an even higher note than it started off on!

No doubt, Sehla Khan made her mark. Anuska Khan obi belt & city landscape border is creative. Asmita Marwa’s Dhoti spin is indeed creative for Indians. Totally inspired by Maheen Khan 2009 showcase in Milan. Her moon collection also include Pakistan’s Fashion lifts & presented in different colors. So much for Indian Fusion line.
