Sunday Fun: Homemade Apple Crumble

Enjoying the juicy chholas, spicy pakoras, aloo samosas, jalebis and gulab jamuns this iftar?! If you’d like to try something different for a change, here’s a quick-fix apple crumble recipe for the next time you get an itch for something sweet. Its easy enough to prepare and there are no fancy ingredients required. For the crumble, you can add some optional items in the end as well such as walnuts, almonds, pecans, and even chocolate chunks if you dare! Enjoy it with some ice cream or a hot cup of tea, here we go:

For the crumble:

1/2 cup melted butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 oatmeal
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda

Method:

In a large bowl, combine all crumble ingredients and stir together. Keep working the crumbs with your spoon or your fingers until the butter is absorbed and forms clumps. If you use a blender, add the oatmeal last and stir it in with a spoon.

For the fruit:

Use four large apples, sliced into bite sized chunks. You can really use any fruit you like. The recipe allows nectarines, peaches, and oranges as well. If you’re extra lazy, like we can imagine you might be this month, you can use canned fruit as well.

Method:

Mix the chopped apples in a pan with a dash of brown sugar and cinnamon, and maybe a tiny bit of juice. Orange, cranberry, or apple will do. If you have none on hand, use water. Simmer the fruit concoction for about 10 to 15 minutes, just until the fruit is somewhat soft and is cooking in it’s natural juices.

Spray your baking dish with some Pam or smear the inside with a bit of butter. Baking dish sizes can vary depending on how thick you want your crumble to be.

Layer the fruit directly into the pan and then sprinkle the crumble on top. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes or until the fruit starts to bubble and the crumble is golden brown.
